Scott Junker Rides the Great Divide
Journal # 2
Hello from Canmore,
So long Banff I had a good time and spent a good share of that with some great people but my feet were getting itchy (which cured any apprehension I had about this solo velo endeavour).
I hiked up Sulphur Mountain yesterday with a bunch of University of Guelph people, and a French girl. Nice hike. I could feel the altitude, but it felt good. Later, while walking last night, we stumbled upon a pair of moose in the Bow River, right in Banff. An adult with a juvenile, and we turned tail the moment they turned their heads.
I left Banff this morning a little after 8:00 AM and the alternate trail around the bear closure was impassable with the trailer. I doubled back and took the bear closure trail. It was beautiful but I kept my head down in the hope of passing any bears without knowing they were even there. About a half-mile in, I came across footprints in the middle of the trail that were unquestionably ursine in origin. Got nervous and got out of the bear closure as quickly as possible. I saw some moose tracks also.
The ride from there was upstream along Goat Creek until the turn to go off route to Canmore. The trail is mostly supersmooth doubletrack which is so loamy that the bearbell doesn't ring itself and needs some help which I'm happy to provide.
On the road into Canmore my way was blocked by mountain goats, but a motorist happened by and ran interference for me.
I jJust had a killer lunch (free soup) from the Drake Inn and I'm heading back out soon. I don't expect internet access in the next couple of days until I get to Fernie. I've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
Southbound and down,
Scott
